Wanneer ik (een van de vele) kringloop winkels binnenga loop ik direct naar de spijkerkleding afdeling. Wetend dat de kans klein is dat ik iets goeds vind, zijn mijn ogen gericht op het rode labeltje met die hoofdletter E.!<\/p>\n

Waarom? \u00a0Die hoofdletter E geeft aan dat het kledingstuk uit een bepaalde periode komt of LVC is, en daarvan gaat elk denimhart sneller kloppen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBepaalde periode\u201d is misschien wat vaagjes, ik probeer het uit te leggen.
\nIn 1873 kreeg Levi’s het patent op de blauwe broek. Toen dat patent verstreek gingen concurrenten diezelfde broek namaken. Levi’s zocht een manier om hun broek kenmerkend te maken.<\/span><\/p>\n

Levi’s begon met de Arcuate<\/a>, naaisel op de broek in de vorm van een vogel.\u00a0<\/span>Dat was nog niet genoeg, rond 1890 begonnen ze met de \u201ctwo-horse-pull-logo\u201d patch op de broek.<\/span><\/p>\n

Toen de concurrenten ook de Arcuate na gingen maken zocht Levi’s naar een nieuw kenmerk. National sales manager Chris Lucier was een van de mensen die met het idee kwam om een gevouwen rood stukje lint in de kontzak te naaien, zo is de Red tab ontstaan.<\/p>\n

In 1936 verschenen de eerste broeken met een Red tab, later kregen ook de jasjes dit labeltje.
\nDoor de jaren heen zijn er kleine veranderingen aangebracht.

Aan de hand van die veranderingen is dus een schatting maken uit welke tijdsperiode het item komt. Dat kleine rode labeltje zegt dus meer dan alleen een merklogo.\u00a0Voor mij is het een handvat in mijn zoektocht naar vintage Levi’s items.<\/span><\/p>\n
